Q: What are your class times and fees?Back to Salt Lake Aikikai home
A: They are on the web site.Q: Is the web site up-to-date?
A: Yes.Q: Do I have to pay to join the Sports Complex in addition to your fees?
A: No. Membership to the Complex for use of the pool, exercise machines, etc is completely separate.Q: Are there any other costs?
A: There are no other costs to practice, and no contracts to sign, however there will be a one-time fee to our parent organization if and when you are tested for rank promotion (although this is entirely optional).Q: Are your classes held only on Tuesday and Friday?
A: Yes. There are occasional weekend afternoon classes led by a senior student, but they are very sporadic and only held when there is demand.Q: Do you hold classes on holidays?
A: Not if a class day falls directly on a major holiday, but otherwise usually class will be held. If you would like to confirm, just contact us.Q: How should I dress to practice? Do I need a uniform?
A: A uniform is not required, but we encourage you to get one as soon as you feel comfortable that you're going to continue. We don't sell them, but can point you to stores that do. Until such time, we recommend something comfortable for exercise, with long sleeves and long pant legs, like sweats. Please try to leave jewelry at home, as you need to remove it during practice. We also recommend a pair of flip-flops or sandals that can be easily slipped on and off.Q: Do you offer any special discounts?
A: There is a 10% discount off the monthly rate if you pay for 6 months in advance. We also have a family discount in which each family member after the first pays an additional $25/month. So for example, a husband and wife would pay $60/month together.Q: What if I can't attend every class?
A: This is no problem at all. You'll need a certain number of days of attendance to qualify for promotion, but you can attend as often as you like.Q: How many people usually attend a class?
A: Typically between 6-12.Q: What is your organizational affiliation?
A: We are affiliated with the Aikikai organization in Tokyo, (the one headed by the Founder's family) and receive our rank directly from them.Q: Will you recognize rank I received at another dojo?
A: Generally, yes. It's best if you can show us your certificate.Q: How long will it take me to get a black belt?
A: You know you shouldn't ask this, right? But if you must know: you should expect at least 5 years, with consistent practice. This means not missing too many classes. Of course there are NO guarantees and your mileage may vary. It really depends on when we think you're ready. If you have a question which is not addressed here, please do not hesitate to contact us (see front page). Even better, come to the dojo to talk to us. You can observe a class, or even join in.
